If jewelry is on your holiday shopping list this year, you’re not alone. According to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation, 13 percent more people will put jewelry on their 2010 holiday shopping lists than did last year.
Basic necessities popular in 2009 are being replaced on the lists by more exciting gifts for the 2010 holidays. And Americans plan to spend slightly more, an average of $688.87, up from $681.83 last year. Rather than using price as the determining factor, as they did last year, more shoppers will be looking at value.

And although wholesale prices on gemstones are up, according to SmartMoney’s 2010 Holiday Jewelry Buying Guide, deals can still be found. The higher costs most likely won’t be passed on to consumers until early next year.
The guide says the key to shopping for diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds as an investment is to be sure you get what you pay for. Ask about the quality and treatment of a stone, and get it in writing.
